Before Contract Expiry: What Saudi OFWs Should Prepare

Before contract expiry
Contract expiry is not something you should prepare for on the expiry date itself. Preparation should start weeks—or even months—before the contract ends.
Sa guide na ito, pag-uusapan natin kung ano ang dapat mong i-check at ihanda before your employment contract expires in Saudi Arabia.
Important: Ang guide na ito ay primarily para sa private-sector workers covered by the Saudi Labor Law. Domestic workers have separate regulations and procedures, including Musaned.
1. Confirm the Actual End Date of Your Contract
Ito ang unang dapat mong gawin.
Huwag umasa sa:
- sinabi ng supervisor,
- sinabi ng recruiter,
- old contract sa Pilipinas,
- screenshot noong nakaraang taon, o
- verbal promise ng HR.
Check your current documented employment contract, especially your Qiwa contract.
Hanapin ang:
- Contract start date
- Contract end date
- Contract type
- Contract renewal
- Notice period
- Termination clauses
Example:
Start Date: January 1, 2025
End Date: December 31, 2026
Contract Type: Fixed Term
Contract Renewal: Automatic or another stated renewal arrangement
Halimbawa:
Contract Type: Fixed Term
Contract Renewal: Indefinite
Contract Type vs Contract Renewal Qiwa Guide
2. Check Kung May Automatic Renewal Clause
The contract shall automatically renew unless either party gives notice before expiration.
Pwedeng nakalagay:
- 30 days
- 60 days
- 90 days
- o ibang period agreed in the contract
Example
Contract end:
December 31, 2026
Required non-renewal notice:
60 days
Dapat ma-check mo ang deadline roughly two months earlier.
3. Decide Early: Renew, Transfer, or Final Exit?
Option A: Renew
Kung gusto mong manatili:
Check muna kung may proposed changes sa:
- salary
- allowances
- job title
- working hours
- accommodation
- transportation
- contract duration
- notice period
Option B: Do Not Renew and Transfer
Check:
- Qiwa contract status
- Iqama validity
- Work permit validity
- Notice/non-renewal requirement
- New employer offer
- Transfer status sa Qiwa
Pero tandaan:
Contract expiry does not automatically mean na completed na agad ang transfer.
Magkaibang proseso ang:
- Ending or non-renewal of the current contract
- Employee transfer to the new employer
- final exit visa
- last working day
- clearance
- return ticket, if applicable
- final salary
- unused leave
- EOSB
- certificate of service/employment documents
Huwag hintayin ang huling araw bago tanungin ang HR tungkol dito.
4. Prepare a Written Notice of Non-Renewal
- company email
- HR email
- official HR portal
- documented letter
- ibang company-approved communication channel
Ang notice ay dapat malinaw na nagsasabing hindi mo gustong i-renew ang contract after its agreed expiry date.
Important distinction ito.
Non-Renewal
Ibig sabihin:
Ayon sa HRSD, ang fixed-term employment contract generally ends when its agreed term expires, subject to renewal provisions and the specific rules applicable to non-Saudi workers.
5. Do Not Choose the Wrong Termination Reason Just to Finish the Process
6. Download and Save Your Qiwa Contract
Save:
- full Qiwa contract PDF
- screenshots ng contract status
- start date
- end date
- renewal clause
- notice period
- salary information
- job title
- employer details
Too late na minsan.
Simple rule
If it affects your employment rights, save a copy.

7. Check Your Iqama and Work Permit Expiry
Huwag contract end date lang ang tingnan.
Check din:
- Iqama expiry
- Work permit expiry
- Passport expiry
Example:
Contract end:
December 20
Iqama expiry:
October 1
Work permit expiry:
September 15
May malaking gap.
8. Check Your Passport Validity
Simple ito pero madalas nakakalimutan.
Kung plano mong:
- final exit,
- umuwi ng Pilipinas,
- transfer,
- mag-process ng ibang employment documents,
check your passport expiry.
- Iqama
- employment contract
9. Review Your Salary Records
Before contract expiry, i-check kung kumpleto ang salary mo.
Review:
- basic salary
- allowances
- unpaid salary
- overtime, if legally/contractually due
- deductions
- incentives or commissions
- other agreed payments
Save:
- bank statements
- payslips
- payroll records
- salary-related emails or messages
Huwag hintayin ang final settlement bago mo mapansin na may missing payment pala several months ago.
10. Check Your Remaining Annual Leave
Under Saudi Labor Law, unused leave may have monetary implications when the employment relationship ends, depending on the applicable circumstances.
So bago matapos ang contract, request or check your:
- leave balance
- approved leave
- unused annual leave
- company leave records
Kung may sariling HR application ang company ninyo, screenshot your balance before mawalan ng access.
11. Estimate Your End-of-Service Benefits
Under Saudi Labor Law, the general EOSB calculation is based on:
- half-month wage for each of the first five years, and
- one-month wage for each year after the first five years,
using the applicable last wage basis, including proportional entitlement for fractions of a year.
12. Prepare Your Own EOSB Estimate
Prepare:
- joining date
- last working date
- total years and months of service
- last applicable wage
- unused leave
- unpaid salary
- other contractual entitlements

13. Ask About Your Final Settlement
Your final settlement may include, depending on your circumstances:
- unpaid salary
- salary up to the last working day
- EOSB
- unused leave entitlement
- other contractually due payments
- legitimate deductions, if any
Under Saudi Labor Law, when the employment relationship ends, the employer generally must settle the worker's wages and entitlements within the legal settlement period.
HRSD states that if the service ends, settlement is generally due within one week, while if the worker is the party ending the contract, the maximum period is generally two weeks.
14. Request Your Certificate of Service
Before mawalan ng access sa company HR, request your employment/service certificate if applicable.
Useful ito sa:
- new employer
- overseas applications
- Philippine employment records
- future visa applications
- proof of experience
Check that important details are correct, especially:
- name
- employment dates
- job title
- period of service
15. Keep Copies of Important Company Documents
Bago matapos ang access mo sa company systems, save the employment records you are legally entitled to keep.
Recommended files:
- Qiwa contract
- employment agreement
- offer letter
- salary records
- payslips
- leave balance
- resignation/non-renewal letter, if applicable
- HR acknowledgment
- transfer-related records
- final settlement
- certificate of service
- Iqama copy
- work permit information
- passport copy
16. Check if HR Acknowledged Your Non-Renewal Notice
Nag-email ka nga—but did HR receive it?
Important ito.
Keep proof showing:
- date sent
- recipient
- subject
- content
- acknowledgment or reply
17. Do Not Stop Working Early Without a Valid Basis
Isa pang risky mistake:
Contract expiry: December 31.
Finish the existing contract, then do not renew it.
Kung basta ka tumigil pumasok before the actual end date, ibang issue na iyon at maaaring magkaroon ng employment consequences.
18. Do Not Sign a New Document Without Reading It
- new contract
- renewal agreement
- clearance
- settlement
- resignation form
- release document
- acknowledgement
Read everything.
Check especially:
- dates
- amount
- termination reason
- waiver language
- salary amount
- EOSB amount
- leave settlement
- deductions
Huwag pumirma dahil lang sinabing:
“Standard form lang yan.”
Once you sign an acknowledgment or settlement, maaaring maging important evidence iyon later.
19. If You Plan to Transfer, Start Looking Before the Contract Ends
Possible kang mawalan ng valuable time.
Instead, while approaching the expiry:
- update your CV
- start applications
- talk with legitimate employers
- understand Qiwa transfer requirements
- check your documents
- monitor your current contract status
20. If You Plan to Go Home, Prepare Your Final Exit Checklist
Check:
- final exit processing
- passport
- airline ticket
- unpaid salary
- EOSB
- leave settlement
- company clearance
- personal belongings
- bank matters
- SIM/mobile accounts
- rental or accommodation obligations
- pending loans or financial obligations
- employment certificate
- personal document backups
21. Keep Everything in Writing
- non-renewal
- resignation
- transfer
- termination
- salary
- EOSB
- final exit
- contract dates
try to get it documented.
Verbal conversations are useful.
Written records are better.
Example:
Instead of relying only on:
“Sabi ni HR okay na raw.”
Request confirmation through email or another official channel.

Common Mistakes Before Contract Expiry
Not necessarily.
Contract expiry, Qiwa status, transfer, and final exit are related—but they are not one single process.
Be careful.
Non-renewal and resignation are not automatically the same thing.
HRSD specifically recognizes that a desire not to renew a contract may not be considered resignation, subject to contractual notice requirements.
Read the clause before the notice window closes.
Start checking early.
Mistake #5: Walang screenshots o copy ng contract
Save your employment documents while you still have access.
Mistake #6: Pumirma agad sa settlement
Verify the amounts first.
Check:
- salary
- EOSB
- leave
- deductions
- termination classification
Frequently Asked Questions
Is non-renewal the same as resignation?
Not automatically.
HRSD explains that a worker's desire not to renew the contract for another term may not be considered resignation. However, if the contract requires advance notice of non-renewal, that notice requirement should be followed.
What happens when a fixed-term contract expires?
Saudi Labor Law recognizes expiry of the agreed contract term as one of the grounds for ending the employment contract, subject to applicable renewal provisions and rules for non-Saudi workers.
Should I give notice even if my contract has an end date?
Check the contract.
Kung may clause requiring notice before non-renewal, follow it.
Read the actual renewal and notice clause.
Can I transfer immediately after expiry?
Do not assume automatic transfer.
The actual transfer depends on the worker's Qiwa status, employer status, applicable mobility rules, and the circumstances of the employment relationship.
Contract expiry and completion of employee transfer are not the same event.
Saudi Labor Law provides EOSB when the employment relationship ends, subject to the applicable rules and circumstances.
Importante ring ma-classify nang tama kung ang employment relationship ended because of:
- contract expiry,
- resignation,
- employer termination,
- mutual agreement,
- or another legal ground.
The classification can matter when determining entitlements.
Final Reminder for Saudi OFWs
Kabayan, kung malapit nang matapos ang contract mo, huwag ang last working day ang gawin mong starting point.
Your preparation should begin before the notice window opens or closes.
Remember these five things:
- Know your real contract end date.
- Read the renewal and notice clauses.
- Decide early whether to renew, transfer, or final exit.
- Keep written proof and copies of your documents.
- Review your final settlement before signing anything.
